π Quick Guide β Getting Started with Incubation
π‘ Before you start
Incubation requires consistent conditions. Temperature and humidity need regular monitoring. Use the settings recommended for your equipment and species, and check your instruments.
π‘οΈ Temperature
- Chicken: 37.5 β 37.8Β°C
- Duck/Turkey: 37.3 β 37.6Β°C
- Quail: 37.5 β 37.8Β°C
- Measure at egg height rather than at the lid
- Stabilize the incubator before setting eggs, following its instructions
π§ Humidity
- Incubation: 50β60% (chicken)
- Lockdown (last 3 days): 65β75%
- Excessively dry conditions can enlarge the air cell
- Excess humidity can impair hatching
- Measure with a calibrated hygrometer
π Turning
- Follow the recommended turning schedule for the incubator and species
- When turning manually, alternate positions consistently
- Stop turning 3 days before the expected hatch (lockdown)
- Automatic turners help maintain a regular schedule
π¦ Candling
- Use a candling light in a dark room
- D7: early blood vessels may be visible
- D14: development should be visible
- Ask for advice if an egg appears infertile or development seems to have stopped
- Keep handling brief and follow the incubator instructions
π£ Lockdown
- 3 days before the expected hatch
- Stop turning
- Adjust humidity to the recommended hatching range
- Avoid unnecessary opening of the incubator
- Hatching can take time; do not intervene solely on the basis of a timer
β οΈ Common mistakes
- Opening the incubator too often
- Helping a chick hatch too early
- Using an incorrectly calibrated incubator
- Setting eggs after unsuitable storage
- Temperature fluctuations caused by drafts

π How to use this tool
π Where to start?
Open Batches and create your first batch. Enter its name, species and setting date. The app calculates an expected hatch date and candling and lockdown reminders.
π‘οΈ Record your readings
Use Readings to record temperature and humidity regularly. The app flags values outside its reference range; follow your equipment and species-specific protocol.
π Your reminders
The dashboard shows upcoming candling, lockdown and hatching dates. Check reminders off as you complete them.
πΎ Your data stays in this browser
Data is stored in this browser. Export a JSON backup regularly using Settings β Backup, especially before changing devices or clearing browser data.
π£ Complete a batch
After hatching, open Batches, choose Complete, and enter the number hatched. The app calculates the hatch rate and archives the batch.
π‘ What is this for?
Estimate incubation costs for electricity, time and eggs, and record chick sales. These estimates help you understand your costs; they are not an accounting or payment service.
